Dj Trance & Fester - Trance Fester Volume 1 (Mixtape) [1992]

1st of 4 tapes they released together. Classic oldschool techno when the scene was at its peak here in Los Angeles. You can still hear the industrial orgins of electronic, early techno was dark, solid and pounding before it turned more jumpy. IMO my favorite style of all electronic, hard Detroit beats with a noisy synth dropped on top, and a sample of some random movie line. I love the oldschool style of mixes, back and forth transitions and a ton of samples. When djs weren't scared to use their fader and actually touched the vinyl.

I played the shit out of this tape as a youth.

VA - Aural Ecstasy - The Best Of Techno (Compilation) [1993]

Classic compilation. Who didn't own this?

Hardfloor - The Best Of (2 CD Compilation) [1997]

German duo who released plenty of acid techno & dub hits, not to mention their remixes. Each song is like a journey, they build you up and drag you on. Considered one of the best and originators of all EDM you hear till this day. I always appreciated their baseball references.

VA - Hard Beat - 2nd Compilation [1989]

I remember hearing this type of music in the late 80s and not fully understanding what it was. Ive always had a broad spectrum of tunes, but this stood out, got my attention and I leached on for good. Repetitive beats, samples over used, an acid backdrop, yet it was almost industrial. Great history lesson here.

The California Project - Ron D Core - Tape 1 of 16 (Boxset, Mixtape) [1994]

At the time this was made it was a very popular set of tapes and hard to find, 16 tapes created by all California djs. Limited run of 300 copies were supposedly made, some colored and and some all black. A wide spectrum of electronic from house to techno to early trippy trance and breakbeat stuff. Tape 1 of 16.

Green Apple FM Radio (Live) [1992]

Mixes from a UK radio station that broadcasted on 98.6 FM from East-End tower blocks. Early in 1990 they moved to 98.1, where they remained until the station closed. More consistent in sound across its output than earlier dance stations, DJs played house, techno, acid house and the growing number of UK house releases that can now be seen as the first roots of hardcore and jungle. Fantasy-FM closed down in 1991. The station had plans to broadcast legally via cable or satellite radio (where later pirate Green Apple Radio became the first legal rave station) but these seem to have come to nothing. Several of its DJs went on to success in music or in later radio stations.
